Medical oncology is the specialty focusing on the use of medical and chemotherapeutic treatments of cancer. The medical oncology physicians at Celilo are certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the sub-specialty of medical oncology.
Samuel Taylor IV, MD
Medical Director, Medical Oncology

Dr. Samuel Taylor, a renowned expert in the medical treatment of cancer, has a wealth of experience not only as a practitioner, but also as a cancer researcher and educator.
After graduating, with distinction, from the University of Saskatchewan Medical School, Dr. Taylor served his medical residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital in New York. He completed an additional two-year fellowship in medical oncology before returning to his hometown of Chicago as an assistant professor at Northwestern University.
From Northwestern, Dr. Taylor transferred to Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, where he became a full professor and practicing physician. While at Rush, Dr. Taylor made a name for himself as chairman of the Breast Committee for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group that developed protocols for breast cancer treatments. He started the first comprehensive breast cancer center in Chicago in the 1980s.
Dr. Taylor was one of the top researchers and practitioners in the area of head and neck cancer and became a leader in studying and managing sarcomas. He is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association of Cancer Researchers.
Steve Fu, MD, PhD
Hematology/Medical Oncology

Dr. Xinyu “Steve” Fu, MD, PhD joined the Celilo medical oncology care team in the fall of 2006. Dr. Fu has an extensive background in hematology and medical oncology. His expertise provides yet another dimension to the vast knowledge available from all of the oncology professionals at Celilo.
Dr. Fu obtained his medical degree in 1988 from China Medical University in Shenyang, China; he then went on to receive his PhD from the University of California, San Diego in 1998. Dr. Fu is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology. Hematology is the study of the nature, function and diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs. With his expertise in hematology, Dr. Fu’s experience has allowed for the expansion of Celilo’s hematology/oncology services and clinical research program.
Dr. Fu served his internal medicine internship and residency at Brown University/Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island before becoming Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Harvard University/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center from 2001 – 2004. He comes to Celilo most directly from his position as Attending Physician, Hematology/Oncology at The Corvallis Clinic, Corvallis, OR.
Nina van Es, RN, MSN, MS
Oncology Nurse Practitioner

After receiving her nursing degree from Portland Community College in 1984, Oncology Nurse Practitioner Nina van Es worked in a number of hospitals and hospice care centers, while simultaneously earning a master's degree in sociology from Portland State University.
In 1999, after 15 years in practice, primarily in cancer and hospice nursing, Nina accepted a research position at Oregon Health & Science University. In 2000 she returned to nursing practice and enrolled in a master's degree program for nurse practitioners, which she completed in 2001.
Later that year, Nina joined the patient care team at Celilo, where in consultation with the oncologists, she manages chemotherapy treatments for patients.
Nina says she especially appreciates Celilo's holistic approach to care.
