Integrated Therapies

At Celilo, we provide patient care in a manner that is unique among cancer centers. Certainly all cancer centers have the goal of healing their patients, but we take a different approach to healing itself. We focus not only on a disease and how it affects the body, but also on how it affects the whole person -- body, mind and soul -- and how it affects the person's loved ones.

Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine

Hand acupuncture

The ancient Chinese believed that there is a universal life energy called Chi present in every living creature. This energy is said to circulate throughout the body along specific pathways that are called meridians. As long as this energy flows freely throughout the meridians, health is maintained, but once the flow of energy is blocked or 'out of balance', the system is disrupted and pain and illness can occur.

Acupuncture involves the usually painless insertion of very fine sterile needles at specific points in the body to 'free up' the Chi energy and restore normal function. Side effects are minimal, and patients often report feelings of deep relaxation during treatment.

Studies have shown that, in addition to providing an overall feeling of well being, acupuncture may help treat or prevent many of the side effects of radiation treatment and chemotherapy.

Acupuncture can be combined with Chinese herbal medicine, which has been used for centuries in the treatment of patients and also can be extremely effective in controlling the side effects of cancer therapy.

Celilo’s Jan Van Es is one of just a few practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in an Oregon hospital who is a fully accredited member of the medical staff and whose skills and services are completely integrated into the care of cancer patients. Jan is a graduate of Oregon College of Oriental Medicine and holds a master’s degree in Oriental medicine.

Acupuncture treatments are available Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 3:30 pm. To make an appointment call (541) 506-6998.

Massage Therapy

neck massage

Massage therapy has been used to enhance healing and general well being since ancient times. This therapy manipulates the skin, muscles and joints for muscle relaxation, improved circulation and stress relief.

Massage is made available to all Celilo patients and their loved ones during visits. Our therapists offer a variety of massage techniques tailored to the individual’s needs. Relaxation, deep body, warm stone and Thai massage are all specialty massages that can be requested.

Yoga

While it is no cure, yoga can be an effective complementary therapy for a variety of conditions, including cancer, and it is an integral component of our Integrated Therapies program.

Yoga’s most obvious benefits relate to stress reduction, flexibility and relaxation. But as more studies are conducted, there is evidence of other tangible health benefits.

Yoga is gentle enough to be practiced by almost anyone. Patients can work within their own limitations and tailor their practice to their specific needs. Yoga’s gentle, mindful and controlled movements can provide a non- or low-impact workout for people in almost any physical condition.

Spa & Meditation Room

Patients can wait for or recuperate from treatment in Celilo’s therapeutic spa, which includes men's and women's Jacuzzis and saunas. Family members also are encouraged to use these facilities.

With views and access to a healing garden, our comfortably furnished meditation room is a peaceful place for people to contemplate, sit and breathe, meditate or pray. It includes both semi-private and open spaces.
