North Central Public Health District has been notified of two school-age residents from separate communities in our district with lab confirmed pertussis (also known as whooping cough) over the past couple of weeks.

Pertussis is a vaccine preventable disease. Vaccination is very effective against severe disease requiring hospitalization. Vaccinated persons may still become ill, but with less severe disease. Pertussis can be very serious and even deadly for infants. Protect them by getting vaccinated.

Becoming vaccinated can decrease your chances of catching this very nasty cough, but more importantly, it will protect those vulnerable babies we all love. Young babies do not have the protection of vaccine, so they rely on the rest of us to stay healthy and not infect them.

North Central Public Health District strongly recommends vaccination for all eligible persons. Vaccines are available for a fee through your healthcare provider or NCPHD. Children may qualify for reduced cost or free vaccines at NCPHD.

Now is a good time to review your vaccination status for all vaccine preventable illness and get caught up on all of your vaccines.

Also, remember to cover your cough with a tissue or an elbow; wash your hands after coughing or sneezing. Stay home when sick. And please, do not visit infants or pregnant women until you are healthy.

Please visit www.ncphd.org or call North Central Public Health District at (541) 506-2600 for more information.
