Philanthropy is a big word that simply means ‘people helping other people’. Here in The Dalles we live with many philanthropists. ‘Lending a hand’ means many things to many people.
Some people give using their time, some give using their energy and yet others, their talent; they match their skills and time with areas of need.
Others realize that one of the best investments they can give is in giving back to the community in which they live; their sharing of resources demonstrates their giving spirit.
So, what is at the heart of giving? What is it that makes a person want to give of their time and/or resources to help another person? Perhaps giving comes from the experience of compassion for another person. Maybe compassion creates more compassion so that it grows into tradition.
These were some of the questions that the Mid-Columbia Health Foundation Board of Directors had in mind when they decided to develop a program to recognize philanthropic efforts throughout our community. By celebrating the giving spirit that exists around us, we all can be inspired to greater levels of compassion. And so was born… the Traditions of Compassion.
As we begin this new year…
We reflect on who we are as individuals and how we can make changes in our lives, how we can begin our own ‘traditions’. For many the questions are simple; how can I be healthier, how can I be happier, how can I make a difference…? These questions can’t be answered for us; the answers must come from within.
Mid-Columbia Medical Center provides many opportunities to make some of the changes or enhancements to our lives that we seek. From the Planetree Health Lecture series, to the numerous classes offered through the Center for Mind & Body Medicine… and the Mid-Columbia Health Foundation whose many funds provide needed assistance to patients and their families… there are many opportunities to enhance our lives in whatever direction that may lead us. We can incorporate compassion; compassion for others, compassion for ourselves. We can give to ourselves or to others the gift of health, or the gift of knowledge… this is a time of new beginnings.
So, take the time to reflect, take the opportunity to refresh and revitalize, and most of all… begin anew and have a very happy New Year!
"The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly." Buddha
