Speciality Treatments for Dysphagia

VitalStimis a non-invasive, external electrical stimulation therapy that is used in conjunction with traditional strengthening treatments for patients with mild to moderate dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). use of nMeS as an adjunct modality accelerates strengthening and helps the brain re-map the action of swallowing. research has demonstrated that combining these therapies results in better outcomes than using either one alone.

Evidence-based findings show:

  • The use of electrical stimulation seems to contribute significantly to the improvement in swallow function
  • NMES in conjunction with swallowing exercise seems to be more effective than traditional treatment techniques alone
  • Mild (limited oral intake) to moderate (PeG fed with minimal oral intake) dysphagia patients benefit the most with over 80% discontinuing PeG
