Adult Speech-Language Therapy Services

MCMC’s Speech-language Pathology department is available in both The Dalles and Hood river for individualized evaluation and treatment for a variety of acquired disorders affecting speech, language, swallowing, cognition and voice.

Speech therapists, also known as speech language pathologists, work with patients to evaluate, diagnose and treat speech, language, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders. Some of the disorders our program helps treat are: aphasia, apraxia, dysphagia, and other voice disorders.

Evaluation and Treatment

Individualized evaluation and treatment available for a wide range of disorders:

  • Acute and chronic deficits following stroke or traumatic brain injury.
  • Voice, speech, and swallowing deficits secondary to Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Pre-procedural counseling and treatment for speech, voice, and swallowing disorders for persons with head and neck cancer or scheduled tracheostomy placement. treatment and education before, during and following surgery and radiation treatment.
  • Voice disorders secondary to neurologic events and behavioral overuse/misuse

Individualized treatment available for functional limitations secondary to the following diagnoses:

  • Oropharyngeal dysphagia
  • Expressive and receptive aphasia
  • Motor speech disorders (dysarthria and acquired apraxia of speech)
  • Voice disorders
  • Cognitive-linguistic disorders

Specialists Assessments

Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) for objective assessment of swallowing function and structure:

  • Allows visualization via fluoroscopy of swallowing anatomy and physiology.
  • Used for diagnosis of dysphagia and objective assessment of aspiration risk.
  • Dynamically assesses diet texture modifications and swallow strategies to provide the best recommendations for safe swallowing and treatment planning

We also provide the following:

  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication: setting up patients who have communication disorders with computer aided communication.
  • Dysphagia therapy technology: Vital Stim Neuromuscular electrical stimulation as well as biofeedback.
