Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies (VFSS)

MCMC is the only facility in the Gorge that offers Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies (VFSS) or Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS).

This is a true inside look at a person’s swallowing mechanism, as our trained Speech Language Pathologists use x-ray or fluoroscopy to see the structures of the mouth, throat and esophagus to help objectively identify the source of a swallow problem.

During this study, the Speech Language Pathologist is able to identify which parts of the throat and mouth may not be working well, find out which foods are safest to swallow, learn if certain positions or strategies can help a person swallow better, and see if food is at risk of entering the airway (aspiration) leading to possible lung conditions.
