The newest physician member of MCMC Sports Medicine and Orthopedics came
a long way, and left a lot behind, for the chance to care for residents
of this region.
He grew up in Kansas City and went to college and medical school there,
leaving only for a few years of specialized medical training, before returning
and setting up practice.
That is where James Reardon, M.D., stayed for 22 years, caring for two,
sometimes three generations of patients, performing thousands of joint
replacements and other orthopedic and sports medicine procedures and chairing
for six years the Joint Replacement Division of a large Kansas City hospital.
He worked frequently with three physician siblings, all of whom referred patients.
Dr. Reardon was about as set as any physician could get. His is not the
career path that one expects to naturally lead to The Dalles.
Yet here he is, setting up his new practice with
MCMC Sports Medicine and orthopedic Surgery, and happy to be doing so.
“No one in Kansas City could believe I was leaving at the top of
my practice,” Dr. Reardon says.
Before he and his family arrived in their new hometown, Dr. Reardon considered
his reasons for the move. “They change hourly,” he said then.
Among them were the opportunity to focus exclusively on taking care of
patients and the chance to expose his family to another part of the country.
“Running a successful practice requires that you spend so much of
your time being a businessman,” he says. “I’m looking
forward to just being an orthopedic surgeon. My wife, Joanne, and I have
six children, ages 13 to 21, and they, of course, were all brought up
in Kansas City. Four of them came with us, and I think it’s good
that they are going to get a different view of the world from a place
a long way from where they’ve spent all their time.”
Dr. Reardon brings to
MCMC Sports Medicine and orthopedic Surgery extensive experience in a broad range of orthopedic procedures. His Kansas
City practice averaged 8,000 patient visits annually, meaning he has performed
thousands of the most common orthopedic procedures, from sports injuries
and knee, shoulder and hip arthroscopy to total hip and knee replacements.
He also brings skills in an array of specialized procedures, such as joint
preservation and cartilage transplantation.
He earned his bachelor and medical degrees from the University of Missouri,
completed his internship and residency at Baylor College of Medicine in
Houston and a traveling fellowship in joint replacement, trauma and sports
medicine in Australia and Switzerland.
Dr. Reardon is board certified in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine.
In addition to his private practice in The Dalles, he will serve as a
clinical professor on the faculty of
Oregon Health & Science University.
He says his philosophy of care is pretty simple: His goal is to use his
skills and knowledge “to help people go back to what they enjoy
doing in their life, whether that is playing football or playing with
their grandkids.”
