The Dalles, Oregon - The Mid-Columbia Health Foundation awarded funds to five local nonprofits
for its 2018 grant cycle. The Area of Greatest Need Grant, which is awarded
annually, was presented to Columbia Gorge Pregnancy Resource Centers and
Windy River Gleaners.
Columbia Gorge Pregnancy Resource Centers was awarded $5,000 for their
project titled “Cribs for Kids” which provides cribs for infants
of families in need. Windy River Gleaners was awarded $3,398 to purchase
a three-door refrigerator. The addition of the refrigerator will allow
the Gleaners to accept and distribute more fresh produce to their customers.
The Board of Directors also granted funds to Dry Hollow Elementary PTA,
Riverside Gymnastics Sports & Arts, Sherman County Ambulance Service
and The Dalles Farmers’ Market. Dry Hollow will purchase a new water
fountain to be installed near the gym in the school; District 21 will
provide installation. The water fountain will be used by students, parents
visiting the school and at school events. The water fountain will also
be available during practice for local Parks & Recreation basketball
teams. Both Riverside Gymnastics and Sherman County Ambulance Service
are using their award to purchase Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
The Dalles Farmers’ Market will apply funds to the Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) match program. Families receiving
SNAP will be given additional free vouchers to use at The Dalles Farmers’
Market for fresh produce.
In recent years the Health Foundation’s Area of Greatest Need Grant
has been awarded to HAVEN, CASA and Give them WINGS. The 2017 grant was
be used to kick-off the Read ‘n Ride program at Chenowith Elementary
School. The Read ‘n Ride program allows students to integrate pedaling
on a bicycle-like device into their otherwise sedentary reading time.
Nonprofit organizations are invited to apply for the Area of Greatest Need
Grant year round. Applications received by December 19, 2018 will be presented
to the Health Foundation Board of Directors in February of 2019 for consideration.
