Mammography is an important part of routine health care for women, yet
many delay seeking one due to fear or discomfort. If that’s why
you’ve been putting off your mammogram, you’ll be glad to
know that The Breast Center at MCMC now offers a mammography system that
was designed specifically to reduce the discomfort and anxiety often associated
with this procedure.
Even more importantly, the new 3D mammography system at MCMC is the best
diagnostic tool available to detect breast cancer. With 3D mammography,
images of the breast are converted into a stack of very thin layers, or
“slices,” allowing a radiologist to evaluate the breast layer
by layer. This greater accuracy means better breast cancer detection and
a reduced chance of being called back for additional testing. A number
of studies have found that 3D mammograms detect more invasive cancers
than traditional 2D mammograms and also reduce the number of false positives.
“Our system allows physicians to see the breast tissue in greater
detail, allowing for better detection and higher diagnostic accuracy,”
said Angela Smith, director of diagnostic imaging at MCMC. “This
enhanced ability to provide a more certain diagnosis provides patients
the opportunity to receive follow-up care and treatment in the early stages,
when treatment options and outcomes are better.”
Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40. If it’s time
