Free Athletic Training Services Provided to Local Middle and High Schools Throughout the Gorge

Mid-Columbia Medical Center helps local athletes win on and off the field.

As part of our mission to spread health and wellness throughout the community, MCMC provides free athletic training services to 8 local middle and high schools. Our services include injury prevention, triage, rehabilitation and concussion care.

To get our local athletes back on the field as quickly and safely as possible, our 5-part program offers the following benefits:

Community partnership

Five MCMC staff members work together to keep student athletes at these schools safe and healthy through the year-round sports seasons.

Our certifiend athletic trainers provide injury prevention programs, sideline injury triage/care, and post-injury rehabilitation in collaboration with MCMC therapy services.

Strength and Conditioning

Certified athletic trainers provide in-school strength, conditioning and injury prevention classes, which has led to athletes becoming bigger, stronger and faster.

We currently assist 5 local schools directly with these classes and have enjoyed watching enrollment soar and the number of classes increase year-over-year.

Coaches report high levels of satisfaction with the increasing athleticism and speed development of their players.

Concussion Care

Our certified athletic trainers have teamed with MCMC doctors, physician assistants, physical therapists, and emergency medicine providers to develop comprehensive concussion management programs.

Our goal is to return athletes to school and sports safely and efficiently, while ensuring that every student has an advocate looking out for their best interests. Thanks to our success, other local schools and community care organizations have adopted portions of it as part of their concussion care efforts.

We also partner with the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) to provide free state-mandated IMPact baseline and post-concussion screening at no cost to schools or families.

Summer Strength Camps

Each year MCMC offers a series of free 8-week strength, conditioning and injury prevention camps to area youth.

We currently run camps in Dufur, The Dalles, Hood River and White Salmon. Camps are open to any local youth in grades 6-12.

Camps have an emphasis on fun, camaraderie and inclusivity, and are meant to help prevent common non-contact sports injuries such as hamstring pulls, ACL tears and ankle sprains by improving strength and athleticism.

MCMC Care Pathway

MCMC certified athletic trainers work closely with a comprehensive team of MCMC orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and pediatric and family medicine providers.

To get young athletes back on the field as quickly and safely as possible, we are usually able to schedule a visit with necessary providers in 1-3 days. This streamlined approach results in quicker and safer return to play.

In addition, we participate in community events like The Dalles Youth Football games, the Pig Bowl, Babe Ruth and JBO baseball and sponsor many local athletic organizations.
